1 barrel of crude oil spilled during maintenance activity on Liza Unity FPSO – ExxonMobil
A barrel of crude oil was released from the Liza Unity Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) on Friday during a maintenance activity.
This was revealed by the Media and Communications Manager for ExxonMobil’s subsidiary, Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL), Janelle Persaud.
According to Persaud, the team on the Liza Unity observed a sheen on the water in the vicinity of the vessel. An investigation was launched, and it was found that the barrel of crude oil was released. She also noted that the activity was immediately stopped, and the leak was isolated.
“Earlier today, additional surveillance by helicopter confirmed that there was no sheen in the area; only a light sheen was perceptible approximately 20 km northwest of the vessel. By midday on September 10th, a support vessel in the area confirmed no further sign of a sheen,” Persaud added.
To this end, the Media and Communications Manager said that response teams continue to monitor the situation closely, noting that all relevant government agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), were notified.
