24-year-old man remanded for murder of Sophia labourer
Twenty-four-year-old Denzil Haynes, who is accused of fatally shooting 27-year-old Yardan Jacobs, was today slapped with a murder charge.
Haynes of Lot ‘T’ 67 North Sophia, Georgetown, was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
The charge stated that on April 16 at the Tanary Area in Sophia, Georgetown, he murdered Jacobs. He was remanded to prison until June 2, 2022.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) had reported that Jacobs, a labourer, was shot on April 16 while hanging out with a group of friends at the Tanary Area in the community.
Jacobs’s cousin, Steve Bacchus, was also shot during the incident, which had occurred at around midnight.
Reports are that Jacobs had gotten into an argument with Haynes. Bacchus subsequently intervened, causing the accused to whip out a firearm and discharge several rounds in the duo's direction.
Jacobs received a gunshot wound to his upper right-side abdomen and Bacchus a gunshot to his lower right-side back.
The accused then fled the scene in an unknown direction, and the duo was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). Jacobs succumbed to his injuries on April 26, 2022, while receiving treatment.
The following day, police issued a wanted bulletin for Haynes. One week later, he turned himself in at the Brickdam Police Station in the company of his attorney, Bernard DaSilva.
