3 killed after lorry topples on Soesdyke/Linden Highway
Three porters are now dead after the motor lorry they were on, toppled several times, pinning them underneath along the Soesdyke/Linden Highway in the vicinity of the Kuru Kururu Public Road.
Dead are Michael Edwards of Timehri Base Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD), Wilfred Phillips, and Alicious Squad, both of Pomeroon River, Region Two.
The Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) reported that the accident occurred at about 23:30h on Wednesday. The motor lorry GNN 4083 was driven by 47-year-old Shawn Lim.
The CCU explained that the lorry was proceeding north along the western side of Kuru Kururu Public Road, Linden/Soesdyke Highway, when the driver alleged that he saw something run across the road, resulting in him pulling left to avoid a collision but ended up losing control of the vehicle.
The vehicle’s left side wheel collided with the barranca causing the vehicle to topple several times down a ditch before coming to a halt.
“As a result, the three victims who were all seated on top of some utility poles in the tray of the lorry were all pinned down at the bottom of the vehicle,” the CCU noted.
The men were assisted by the Police and public-spirited citizens and rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre in an unconscious state, where they were all pronounced dead on arrival.
The bodies were then escorted to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, awaiting a Post Mortem Examination (PME).
A breathalyser test was conducted on the lorry’s driver, and it showed no trace of alcohol. Notwithstanding, the driver was taken into custody as the investigation continues.
