54-year-old businessman killed in Bartica accident

A fatal accident occurred on Saturday 16th April 2022 at about 22:00 hrs on First Avenue, Bartica.


The accident involved a motorcycle (CJ 5256) owned by Stacy David of Three-Mile Bartica and driven by Eric David, a 19-year-old miner, and pedestrian Premnauth Persaud, a 54-year-old businessman of First Avenue, Bartica.


The accident scene was visited on April 16th, 2022 at about 22:10 hrs. by police.


Enquiries disclosed that Eric David was driving the said motorcycle with pillion rider Phebeon Stanford, a 19-year-old of Carabese Hill, in a northern direction along the western carriageway of First Avenue at a fast rate of speed when he lost control and collided with Premnauth Persaud who was standing on the western parapet of the said road.


As a result of the collision, Eric David, Phebeon Stanford and Premnauth Persaud fell onto the road surface and received injuries about their bodies.


David and Stanford were picked up in a conscious state while the pedestrian, Premnauth Persaud, was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Bartica Hospital by the Police.


The driver and pillion rider were seen and examined by a doctor on duty and sent away.


However, Premnauth was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.


The motorcycle was lodged to be examined by the licensing and certifying officer.


A breath alcohol test was conducted on the driver of the motorcycle and no trace of alcohol was found in his system. The driver is presently in Police custody assisting with the investigation.


Persaud's body is at the Bartica Regional Hospital's morgue awaiting PME.
