- Planting to commence soon after 1st shade house completed
Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha on Tuesday visited the National Agriculture Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) commercial farm to assess the progress made with the model shade houses that are being constructed.
Five model shade houses are being constructed at the Mon Repos facility with the first shade house to be completed by Monday. The shade houses form part of the Agriculture and Innovation Entrepreneurship Programme that was launched by President Dr. Irfaan Ali on January 12, 2021.
These farms will be looked after by agriculture graduates from the University of Guyana who will later form a ‘One Guyana’ company to profit of these crops. High value crops such as broccoli, cauliflower and carrots are expected to be planted at this location. Minister Mustapha said he expects planting of the high value crops to commence soon.
"so this here will be replicated in other parts of the country, or different parts of the region.”
This programme is aimed at empowering youths while also developing the agriculture sector in Guyana. It also intends to reduce Guyana’s high import bill.
A number of young people have commended the initiative.
