Alleged chicken smuggler hospitalised after seawall shooting
Naresh Ramjattan, a 36-year-old resident of Greenfield, East Coast Demerara (ECD), is hospitalised in stable condition after sustaining two gunshot wounds.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said in a statement that the incident occurred on Saturday night at the Enmore seawall.
Ramjattan reported that he was standing on a boat when he suddenly heard several loud explosions and realised he had been shot in the leg and shoulder.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation. Three enforcement officers from the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) have provided written statements and undergone gunshot residue tests as part of the investigation.
In a related development, police arrested Ganesh Ramcharran, also known as ‘Brian,’ a 22-year-old porter from Bee Hive, at around 07:05 h on Sunday. Ramcharran was found hiding in a clump of bushes along the Enmore seawall.
Upon questioning, Ramcharran initially claimed he was at the seawall to catch crabs. However, he later admitted that individuals from Bee Hive had hired him to transport chicken from a boat to buses.
Ramcharran was taken into custody and is currently assisting with the ongoing investigation.
