Alleged domestic violence offender shot by Police during arrest
Jermaine Haynes, a 32-year-old construction worker from the Little Diamond Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara (EBD), is currently hospitalised after being shot by police during an altercation on Wednesday evening.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) reported that police were responding to a call from Haynes’ 33-year-old wife, who had fled to a neighbour’s home for safety.
She informed authorities that her husband had slapped her, broken a table in their house, and threatened to kill her, prompting her to run for help.
The report was forwarded to the Regional Division 4 ’B’ Operations Room, and two police constables armed with 9mm pistols were dispatched to the scene.
Upon their arrival, they made contact with the distressed wife, who detailed the alleged assault.
The officers then proceeded to the couple’s residence to apprehend Haynes. However, as they approached, the suspect exited the house in a rage and immediately attacked the officers.
During the confrontation, the 32-year-old construction worker reportedly managed to disarm one of the constables.
In response, the second officer drew his service weapon and fired two shots at Haynes, striking him in the lower right leg. The suspect was then subdued and arrested.
Following the incident, the alleged domestic violence offender was taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where he received medical attention for his injuries. He remains hospitalised under police guard while the investigation continues.
