The APNU+AFC opposition party in a statement hours after a fiery protest erupted in Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara, said it condemns all acts of violence and criminality, noting "that such acts only serve to undermine and distract from the legitimate aims of the protest action."
"Though these protests are linked directly to the police execution of Quindon Bacchus, the outpouring of persons on the streets is driven by the deep and persistent grievances many Guyanese feel in light of PPP discrimination and bad governance" the party stated.
It started off as a peaceful protest action intended to call for justice to prevail in relation to the shooting of Quindon Bacchus but escalated quickly after rioters looted, set stalls and a minibus on fire at the Mon Repos Market, East Coast Demerara.
The protest erupted after a social media agency reported that the policeman involved in the shooting of Quindon Bacchus to death was released from police custody. However, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) clarified that the rank remains under close arrest and confined to the Police Headquarters.
President Irfaan Ali has since called for calm and respect for the justice process.
