Archery Guyana’s efforts to boost Olympic-style shooting in Region 9 will be put on display when archers turn out for a Championship event later this month.

Archery Guyana is set to host the first-ever Region 9 Championships on September 25 at the Wilson Laurentino’s Sports Ground in St. Ignatius.

The one-day recurve tournament is open to archers in St. Ignatius and neighbouring villages in Region 9. Archers will be required to shoot at 18 meters. Registration ends on September 20.

Just over a month ago, Archery Guyana made a donation of recurve bows and arrows to aid the establishment of a Region 9 archery club.

Trained Archery Coach and local coordinator of the Archery programme in St. Ignatius Shunette Thompson said children in the community have taken a keen interest.

“Archery Guyana, when they supported us and donated this equipment, the archers, the youth especially, they were very excited to be part of it. You know, because their leisure time is mostly spent at home doing nothing. So when we got this equipment, and they learned to use it, they were very excited.”

Thompson notes that traditional bow and arrow shooting has long been popular in the Region, but the Olympic-style bows are new to the local archers.

With training being conducted at the St. Ignatius Wilson’s Ground three days a week for the past month, she now trains over a dozen archers.

“I had more, but due to their work schedule, some of them couldn’t make it for training. There are some of them who are interested, but the time is beating them cause they are working.”

The upcoming tournament is an opportunity for the new archers to showcase their talent in a competitive environment and fuel further interest in the sport in the region.
