Bandit fatally shot in NA jewellery store robbery identified
The bandit, who was fatally shot by a businessman during a robbery at his jewellery store at Trinity Street and Main Road, New Amsterdam, Berbice, on Monday, has been identified as 26-year-old Terrence John.
MTV News Update understands that John of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, is no stranger to law enforcement officials as he would have had several brushes with the law.
In 2022, he was caught on a narcotics farm in the Upper Berbice River. It is unclear if he was ever charged.
Authorities have confirmed that a second suspect, who fled the scene, has since been apprehended and is in police custody, assisting with the investigation.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) had said that the robbery occurred at about 10:20h, during which, two bandits, both armed and clad in hoodies, stormed the jewellery and pawnshop and robbed a customer.
In the process, one of the customers was shot in the right leg. Upon hearing the commotion, the owner, who is a licenced firearm holder, quickly returned fire, resulting in the robbers attempting to flee while discharging several rounds.
The bandits escaped with some of the stolen goods and ran towards the New Amsterdam Primary School compound, where John, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest, collapsed and died on the spot.
John was found lying face up with a single gunshot wound, while a Taurus 9mm handgun, a magazine loaded with live rounds, and some of the stolen items were recovered from his pockets and the surrounding area.
