Berbice engineer accused of murdering fiancée freed
Neil Madramootoo, who was charged last year in November for murdering his finance, has been freed of the charge.
Madramootoo, an engineer attached to the Regional Democratic Council of Region Six, made another court appearance on Wednesday before Magistrate Peter Hugh in the Albion Magistrate’s Court.
During the proceedings, the Magistrate found that the prosecution failed to prove a prima facie case of murder against the engineer. As a result, he was freed.
Madramootoo of Shoe Lane, New Amsterdam, was initially charged with attempted murder and was out on $500,000 bail. However, the charge was later upgraded to murder following the death of his 32-year-old fiancée, Ashmin Mahadeo.
Mahadeo was discovered with a gunshot wound to her neck on October 1, 2023, and rushed to a hospital in Berbice in an unconscious state.
While the incident occurred at Williamsburg, Corentyne, she died on November 12.
Reports were that the bullet entered from the back of the neck and exited through the jaw.
