Berbice man who brutally chopped & stabbed ex-lover slapped with attempted murder charge
Sasenarine Sankar, a 47-year-old barber from Lot 2 ‘E’ No. 69 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, was remanded to prison on Friday after being slapped with attempted murder of his ex-partner.
The charge stated that on April 5, 2023, Sankar wounded Sandy Persaud with the intent to commit murder. Sankar appeared before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy at the Albion Magistrate’s Court, where he was not required to plead to the charge.
Police Prosecutor Shinnel Matterson objected to bail, citing Sankar as a flight risk, noting that he had fled to Suriname since the offence was committed. Sankar was remanded to prison, and the case is set to be called again on May 23.
The 47-year-old barber’s appearance in court comes after one year on the run. He was recently deported from Suriname by authorities there.
The incident took place at Number 55 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, where Sankar allegedly entered Persaud’s home while she was asleep and inflicted multiple wounds with a sharp weapon.
After committing the act, Sankar fled to Suriname. However, he was captured at a tyre shop in Suriname and subsequently deported back to Guyana.
