Boy, 13, fatally stabbed by 11-year-old friend
Kareem Durant, a 13-year-old student at Carmel Secondary School and of ‘D’ Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown, was allegedly killed by his 11-year-old on Tuesday night.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF), in a statement, said that Durant was pronounced dead shortly after the incident, which took place around 19:10h in Cummings Park, E Field Sophia.
According to the police report, Durant and the suspect were longtime friends who often played together in their community.
On the evening of the incident, the 11-year-old was seated on a pile of PVC pipes outside his home when Durant reportedly approached and pushed him, causing him to fall.
Following this, the 11-year-old reportedly went inside to inform his older brother about the push.
The older brother subsequently confronted Durant to discuss the incident. An argument broke out, prompting Durant to leave, only to return moments later with another individual armed with a pair of scissors.
Police say Durant allegedly stabbed the suspect’s older brother in the lower back with the scissors. Witnessing the attack on his brother, the 11-year-old allegedly pulled a knife from his waistband and stabbed Durant in the chest.
Durant tried to flee, heading towards his home, but collapsed on the pavement outside. His older brother, Shawn Fletchman, rushed him to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Crime scene investigators recovered a brown-handled knife, believed to be the weapon used in the stabbing, from a nearby trench. The scissors, found close to where Durant fell, were also collected. Both weapons were secured and placed into evidence.
The 11-year-old suspect was taken into custody at the scene and escorted to the Turkeyen Police Station, accompanied by his father. Durant’s body is at the hospital’s mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
