A 17-year-old boy is currently in Police custody for allegedly running over a pedestrian on the Charity Extension Scheme, Access Road on the Essequibo Coast on Thursday.

Dead is 35-year-old Manniram Sooklall, a labourer of Lot 403 Charity Extension Scheme, Essequibo Coast. The accident occurred at about 19:00h.

Reports are that a raptor motorcycle driven by a 17-year-old boy was allegedly proceeding east along the access road at a fast rate of speed when he 'ran over something' and stopped to see what it was.

The teen motorcyclist told investigators that he saw it was a male lying on the northern side of the road with what appeared to be blood. He panicked and drove away.

Sooklall was picked up in an unconscious condition and rushed to the Charity Public Hospital in a Police Force motor pickup but was pronounced on arrival.

The man’s body is at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a Post Mortem Examination (PME). Further investigations are ongoing.
