Boy, 5, killed after metal barrel explodes at Prospect
A five-year-old boy, Fayyaz Sahid, was killed on Thursday after a metal barrel exploded at his home in Prospect, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
The incident took place around 16:30h at Lot 174 Prospect.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Fayyaz’s parents, 35-year-old Faiaze Sahid, and 37-year-old Jessica Williams, were using a Total Arc Welding Torch on their veranda to cut a metal barrel to make a barbecue grill.
During the process, the barrel, marked with a “highly flammable” warning, suddenly exploded.
The explosion caused the top of the barrel to blow off, striking young Fayyaz, who was standing nearby.
His parents immediately rushed him to the Diamond Diagnostic Hospital, but he was tragically pronounced dead on arrival.
Police ranks, led by Regional Commander, and Deputy Superintendent Wayne DeHearte, examined the scene and observed the flammable markings on the barrel.
Further investigations revealed that the explosion resulted in injuries to Fayyaz’s left hand and head.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, with detectives continuing to probe the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
