Guyana has confirmed its first case of the monkeypox virus, a well-placed source within the Ministry of Health has revealed.
MTV News Update was reliably informed that Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony is preparing to make the announcement to the public.
Only last week, Dr Anthony revealed that two suspected cases that were sent for testing returned negative.
Moreover, he noted that a section of the Infectious Diseases Hospital at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara (ECD), had been set up for persons who need to be isolated.
Men who have sex with men are more vulnerable to contracting the virus, but Dr Anthony also noted that other persons share the risk of contracting the virus.
Monkeypox was recently declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
