Breaking News: Sergeant Bascom to be slapped with cyberbullying charge

Police Sergeant Dion Bascom

Police Inspector Richard Frank of the Brickdam Police Station has filed a criminal charge against Police Sergeant Dion Bascom.

Bascom is expected to be hauled before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court tomorrow to answer the charge.

The charge states that Bascom used a computer system to disseminate information about Frank, knowing the same to be false, to cause public ridicule, contempt, and hatred, or embarrassment.

Sergeant Bascom took social media by a storm last month, hours after he was released from Police custody after being arrested in connection with a drug bust at a Norton Street, Georgetown residence.

He had claimed that there was a conspiracy to kill him and cover up the murder of Ricardo Fagundes, known as ‘Paper Shorts.’ In fact, he fingered several Senior members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) in the bribe-taking allegations while deeming them “corrupt.”

The Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) completed a probe and submitted the matter to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

The DPP then recommended several criminal charges against Bascom, but these are still to be instituted.

City businessman Azruddin Mohamed has already filed a 200 million lawsuit against Bascom. On Friday, the Ministry of Home Affairs disclosed that the Regional Security System (RSS) had found no evidence of corrupt practices or any attempt to cover up Fagundes’ murder.
