Businesses shut down, commuters forced to return home as residents block roads along East Coast

A massive protest erupted this morning at Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara (ECD), over reports that the police rank under close arrest for the fatal shooting of Quindon Bacchus was released.

Our team, who was on the scene, understands that the protest began from Golden Grove and continued along the way up to the East Coast in several villages.

The scores of protestors blocked the path of commuters with demolished vehicles, tyres, and large pieces of wood, resulting in businesses being forced to close down and commuters returning to their homes.

A few vehicles of police ranks who were on the scene were seen shouting at vehicles proceeding in the path of the protest to "turn back now."

As more people joined the protest, the police ranks on the scene were seen putting on riot gear in an attempt to get the situation under control.

Meanwhile, in a brief statement, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) denied the claim that the rank was released but explained that he remains under arrest and confined to Police Headquarters.

This is a developing story. We will bring more details as it unfolds.
