Businessman fatally shoots cane harvester during commotion outside Beer Garden

A New Year’s Day altercation at a beer garden in Black Bush Polder in Region Six turned deadly when 65-year-old businessman Moonie Ramnarine fatally shot Yognand Chaitram, a 29-year-old cane harvester from Alness Village, Corentyne.

The incident occurred around 10:00h on January 1, 2025, outside Ramnarine’s beer garden, located on the lower flat of his residence.

Police reports indicate that an argument broke out among patrons at the establishment, escalating to the point where Chaitram and others began breaking bottles and issuing threats.

Ramnarine, who holds a licence for a .32 pistol, claimed he was attempting to close his gate to de-escalate the situation when Chaitram and another man allegedly threw him to the ground, injuring his elbow.

While on the ground and reportedly being threatened with bottles, Ramnarine discharged two rounds from his firearm.

One of the shots struck Chaitram, who collapsed on the roadway outside the beer garden.

Ramnarine secured his premises, reported the incident to the police, and voluntarily surrendered his firearm and licence. Investigators recovered two spent .32 shells—one inside the beer garden and another near the gate.

Chaitram’s body was transported to the Miciburi Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Ramnarine is in police custody, assisting with the investigation. His firearm and licence have been lodged with enforcement officials.
