Weeks after facing 30 charges, Deputy Commissioner of Police (ag) Calvin Brutus was on Monday slapped with an additional 201 charges of liability of an officer and was released on bail amounting to over $10 million.

Brutus, an attorney-at-law, appeared before Chief Magistrate (ag) Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

He was not required to plead to the indictable offences. These 201 new charges will join the 30 he faced last month, which ranged from misconduct in public office to obtaining money by false pretence.

For these new charges, he is scheduled to make another court appearance on January 17, 2024.

Last month, 44-year-old Brutus, along with his pregnant wife, Adonika Aulder, his driver, Sergeant Kevin George, and businessman Asif Zafarally, were all charged and placed on bail totalling $9.1 million.

These charges were related to financial crimes involving hundreds of millions of dollars belonging to the Guyana Police Force (GPF).

Monday was also set for reports and statements in relation to last month’s charges. However, statements were not available, and the prosecution requested additional time. As a result, they will return to court on December 18, 2024.

A few months ago, the Assistant Police Commissioner proceeded on annual leave to allow for an investigation into financial impropriety allegations against him.

However, after the investigation was expanded due to new information and documents from the Financial Intelligence Unit, Brutus was placed on administrative leave. Not long after, he and the others were charged.
