Cane harvester who chopped friend over bicycle remanded
26-year-old Mark Anderson, who was caught on camera chopping his friend over a bicycle, was on Tuesday slapped with an attempted murder charge.
Anderson of Lot 30 Two Sisters Street, Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice, was arraigned before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh in the Albion Magistrate’s Court.
He was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which stated that on October 7, 2022, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded 56-year-old Lawrence Rodriques with the intent to murder him.
Police had reported that Anderson and Rodriques had an ongoing dispute. It was reported that the victim removed his pedal cycle from in front of the accused’s house, which he had lent him.
As he removed the pedal cycle, Anderson armed himself with a cutlass and dealt the victim several chops about his body.
In a video seen by MTV News Update, the victim could be seen using the bicycle as a shield as the cane cutter chops him.
Rodriques was escorted to the Port Mourant Public Hospital and was later transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where his condition was listed as serious.
After hearing the case, the Magistrate remanded the accused until November 07.
