A 31-year-old man was on Tuesday arrested after ranks of the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) unearthed 49 parcels of marijuana in a motorcar following a high-speed chase.

In a statement, CANU said an operation was conducted at Cambridge, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD) and officers attempted to stop a silver/grey motor vehicle bearing licence plate number PAB 2143.

The driver refused to stop, prompting the officers to pursue the vehicle. The driver continued to drive at a fast rate, which caused him to lose control of the vehicle, resulting in it going into a canal on the Mahaica Road.

The driver and another occupant attempted to flee, but CANU ranks apprehended the driver. The other occupant managed to escape into the nearby bushes.

A search of the motor vehicle revealed seven salt bags containing 49 parcels suspected to be cannabis.

Tion Clinton Thompson, of Golden Fleece, West Coast Berbice (WCB), was arrested and escorted to CANU’s Headquarters with the suspected narcotics.

The narcotics tested positive for cannabis, with a total weight of 93.6 kilograms with a street value of $13 million. Investigations are ongoing.
