A car is suspected of having been maliciously set on fire at Hibiscus Avenue, AA Eccles, East Bank Demerara (EBD) on Friday night, and the driver has since refused to provide information to firefighters, the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) said.

In a statement, the GFS said they were alerted of a fire at the location around 20:17h, and a fire tender was dispatched to the scene.

“Upon arrival, firefighters observed a vehicle on fire and quickly sprang into action to extinguish the blaze. One line working from WT#113 tank supply was used to extinguish the fire, but the vehicle and its contents were destroyed,” the GFS said.

According to GFS, the fire may have been the result of a malicious act.

“However, when questioned, the presumed owner/driver was uncooperative and refused to provide firefighters with information regarding the vehicle and the fire, highlighting that they had not called the fire station nor made the report,” the statement noted.

As such, the matter was referred to the police for further investigation. To this end, the GFS urged citizens to cooperate with firefighters in providing the required information.

“All fires must be reported to the GFS, which is the sole agency with the responsibility for preventing and extinguishing fires within the country,” the missive concluded.
