Chaos erupted on Sunday at the Georgetown and Vreed-En-Hoop Stellings as hundreds of commuters attempted to make their way to their destination following the abrupt closure of the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
The Harbour Bridge - the main thoroughfare over the river – was forced to close after a Tug and Barge slammed into the floating structure, hitting retractor nine span.
When MTV News Update visited the Stellings, hundreds of persons could have seen attempting to board a boat to head over the Demerara River.
The Corporation, in a statement, noted that Engineers are currently conducting maintenance work. Still, it is unclear whether it will be finished in time for the new academic year, which opens tomorrow.
Only in March, a tug and barge crashed into the 44-year-old bridge, dislocating a pontoon anchoring chain.
