Children awarded in sixth National Signing Bee Competition
The annual Signing Bee Competition, designed deliberately to make space for students of Special Schools during Education Month, was recently concluded at the Berbice High School with nine students being awarded prizes.
The Signing Bee is intended to stimulate the language faculty of students by expanding their vocabulary and augmenting the stock of words they process, while fostering inter-school relations among students of Special schools. The participants were required to spell words from looking at photographs and to express phrases using sign language.
The competition featured four categories, the seven to 10 age group, the 11 to 13 age group, the 14 to 18 age group and the teachers' category where persons were awarded from first to third place in each.
The Linden Special Education Needs Centre was victorious in the 7 – 10 years and 14 – 18 years’ age categories. New Amsterdam Special School won the 11 – 13 years. First place in the Teacher’s category was Fiona Fraser from the Schoonord Learning Centre for Diverse Needs.
