Updated: Jul 27
Jairam Ramkishun, a 59-year-old construction worker of Lot Westminster Housing Scheme, West Bank Demerara (WBD), was fatally shot in the wee hours of Sunday during a home invasion.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Ramkishun resided in a one-flat concrete structure with his wife, Tajwantie Harry Persaud, a 50-year-old housewife, and their two sons, ages 24 and 25.
Ramkishun’s wife related to investigators that at about 01:30h, she and her husband were asleep in their bedroom when they were awoken by three males dressed in hoodies, one of whom was armed with a firearm.
The intruders demanded cash and jewellery, and one of them struck Persaud multiple times on the head with the gun.
Ramkishun attempted to fend off the attackers, and his son joined the struggle, eventually forcing the suspects out of the house.
During the altercation, Ramkishun’s son sustained a stab wound to his left rib area.
The 69-year-old construction worker then armed himself with a cutlass and pursued the men into the yard.
Persaud reported hearing a loud gunshot and found her husband lying face down in a pool of blood at the front of the yard.
A family friend was contacted, and the incident was reported to the police. Upon investigation, it was discovered that an iPhone 8 valued at $80,000 and an iPhone 11 were missing from the home.
The police recovered two 9mm live rounds, one 9mm spent shell, a black haversack, and two flap hats from the scene.
Several individuals have been questioned, and the body of the deceased is at the Ezekiel Funeral Home, awaiting a post-mortem examination. The investigation is ongoing. Editor’s Note: The Police had initially said the deceased was 69 years old. However, the family confirmed the man was 59. The Police also claimed it was three bandits, but the family has since claimed it was four persons who invaded their home.
