Construction worker among five in custody over illegal gun and ammo
A construction worker is among five individuals in police custody after a search unearthed an unlicensed firearm and two live rounds of ammunition.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) reported that at about 23:50h on Saturday, ranks from the Beterverwagting Police Station were on patrol when they intercepted a vehicle and detained the driver and four occupants.
The incident occurred in the vicinity of Success Railway Embankment, where the officers were heading west, when they observed a gold-coloured Toyota motor car bearing registration number PRR 9318, about 30 feet ahead.
The car was intercepted, and the driver identified himself as Quacy Simon, a 30-year-old construction worker from Buxton, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
The four other occupants were identified as Joshua Bevney, also known as ‘Aaron,’ a 21-year-old from Friendship, Alex Jordan, a 32-year-old from Vigilance North, Daniel Rodrigues, a 29-year-old from Friendship, and Bariek Williams, also from Friendship.
According to the GPF, all five individuals were asked to exit the vehicle for a search. During the search, Jordan and Bevney were acting suspiciously.
A subsequent search of Bevney revealed a live round of ammunition and an empty .22 magazine in his left front pocket.
When asked if he held a firearm license, Bevney admitted he did not, stating, "Is me friend give it to me fuh keep.” He then indicated that the firearm was behind the car seat, pointing out the location to the officers.
Upon further searching the vehicle, the police discovered a .22 firearm and another live .22 round of ammunition. Bevney again admitted he did not have a license for the firearm, reiterating, “Is me friend give me them thing fuh keep.”
Simon, along with Bevney, Jordan, Rodrigues, and Williams, were all escorted to the BV Police Station, where they were placed into custody as the investigation continues.
