Contractor who gambled out $1.7M for works at Yarakita Primary School gets 2 years jail

Charged: Doorman Henry

A 44-year-old contractor, who the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs awarded $1.7 million to purchase building materials to construct a hall at the Yarakita Primary School, was today sentenced to two years imprisonment after he admitted to gambling out the money.

Doorman Henry was hauled before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to the charge.

The charge states that on August 17, at Main Street, Georgetown, while being entrusted with $1.7 million by the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, he converted it to his use and benefit.

The Court heard that on the day in question, the 44-year-old contractor received the money from the Tashao of Yarakita to purchase building materials to construct a hall at the Yarakita Primary School, a contract signed by the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs.

After receiving the money, Henry went to Sleepin International Hotel and Casino, where he gambled the money over three days.

He later went to the Ruimveldt Police Station, where he made a report of a robbery under arms. An investigation was launched, following which he admitted that he gambled the money and lost.
