Corentyne labourer confesses to killing wife
The Police in Berbice are investigating an alleged murder committed on 30 year-old Oma Devi Veerasammy lot 172 Bloomfield New Scheme, Corentyne, Berbice which occurred between yesterday and 4:30 hrs today.
Initially investigators were told by the suspect that at about 19:00 hrs while the deceased was making up the bed for their baby, she slipped and fell on a cutlass which was between two mattresses in their bedroom causing her to receive a cut to her ankle.
The suspect told police he assisted the woman by dressing the wound after which she retired to bed. However, when he woke up about 04:40 today, he observed her body lying motionless on the bed and immediately alerted neighbours and police.
Further, the police contacted the 35 year-old suspect and took him to the Police Station, Criminal Investigation Department and told him of an allegation levelled against him and cautioned him. It was while at the station that the accused confessed to detectives and gave details of what really transpired the night before.
The suspect revealed that he and his reputed wife Oma Devi Veerasammy had a misunderstanding where she accused him of being unfaithful since he collected a bottle of Absolut Vodka from his neighbour Sharmaine Campbell. During the argument she pushed him which resulted in him arming himself with a 22 inch cutlass and dealing her several lashes about her body causing her to receive a cut to her right ankle and injuries to other parts of her body including under her left eye.
A statement was taken from the accused while further investigations are ongoing.
