Cotton Tree Mason dies after altercation with younger brother
A New Year’s Day family dispute ended tragically when 41-year-old mason Kiran Bacchus succumbed to injuries sustained during an altercation with his younger brother, 27-year-old Deepak Bacchus.
The incident occurred around 1:30h on January 1, 2025, at Deepak’s residence at Lot 35 Section ‘A’ Cotton Tree, where he lives with his wife, Tena, and their mother, Sookranie Bacchus.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Kiran became upset after learning that Deepak had prevented his wife, Seeta Churchand, from entering the yard where their mother lives.
In a heated state, Kiran reportedly forced his way into the yard to confront Deepak, leading to a physical struggle between the two brothers.
The altercation escalated, resulting in both men falling to the ground. Kiran struck his head during the fall, which caused him to bleed from his nose and left him appearing dazed.
Family members, including Deepak, his mother, and a driver, rushed Kiran to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. Despite their efforts, Kiran died while receiving treatment.
Kiran’s wife, Seeta, informed investigators that her husband had previously suffered a severe head injury in 2015 in Trinidad, where he was attacked and chopped by two men. The injury required surgery, leaving him vulnerable to further trauma.
Deepak, who is in custody at the Blairmont Police Station, told investigators during a video-recorded interview that he had been at home with his wife and mother when Kiran and Seeta arrived at the gate, attempting to force it open.
When Kiran entered, Deepak said he was shoved, and a struggle ensued. Deepak admitted to striking Kiran twice while he was on the ground and noticed blood coming from his brother’s nose.
He stated that he tried to clean the blood and immediately sought help to transport Kiran to the hospital.
