Deadly Barnwell fire was electrical – Fire Service
Hours after a one-storey wooden building at Barnwell, aback Mocha on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD) went up in flames, claiming the lives of three children, the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) confirmed that the fire's origin was electrical.
The GFS, in a statement on Thursday, said that they received a call at about 01:25h and was informed of a fire at 10 Field Barnwell, Mocha, EBD.
"Water Tenders #95 from the Diamond Fire Station and #107 from the West Ruimveldt Fire Station were immediately dispatched to the location. The first water tender arrived on the scene at 1:42 hours but was unable to access the home, which was already entirely engulfed by the fire, due to the deplorable state of the dam," the GFS said.
As a result, the building was destroyed, and Timothy Kippins,8, Trayshaw Kippins,6, and Zhlia Flue,1, perished.
"The Guyana Fire Service would like to express sincere condolences to the family and friends of the children and continues its plea for citizens to take the necessary precautions to avoid fire emergencies."
To this end, the GFS urged citizens not to leave children unattended or at home without adult supervision.
