Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Nigel Dharamlall on Wednesday disbursed $29 million in subventions to the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) and the Anna Regina Town Council.

The handing over was done at the Regional Democratic Council Boardroom in Anna Regina.

These monies are expected to finance the cost of community projects along with the enhancement in the various communities across Region Two.

“Today we’re going to be handing over $29M to you to start doing your community work. In the next few weeks, we will also be bringing an additional $29M to cover the subvention programmes for the 8 NDCS and the township” Minister Dharamlall stated.

The Local Government Minister urged the regional authorities and NDCs councillors to work in citizens’ best interest. He urged them not to be ‘power drunk’ and take advantage of the people.

“When we make commitments, we also expect you to fulfil those commitments, when you make commitments at your council, please make sure you fulfil those commitments. Your decision-making has to also be very open and transparent. We’re still getting reports of people who are not comfortable.”

The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development will be auditing the various NDCS and the Town Council to ensure that the monies serve the residents.
