Draft Oil Spill Bill completed, sent to President’s Office – AG
The draft Oil Pollution Prevention, Preparedness, Response, and Responsibility Bill of 2025, also known as the “Oil Spill Bill,” is officially completed.
Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, SC, shared the update during his weekly programme, ‘Issues in the News.’
“I’m happy to announce that the draft of the oil spill bill is now completed,” Nandlall said. “It has been sent to the Office of the President for examination and further action.”
The bill, among other things, mandates compensation to individuals and entities for economic and other losses incurred as a consequence of any oil spills.
The government was hoping to table the legislation in the National Assembly before the end of 2024, but Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has shared some challenges and said that it will be laid early this year.
The Office of the President, specifically the Office of the Vice President, will review the draft bill, after which consultations and discussions will get underway.
