Driver arrested for assaulting wife dies in Lethem lock-ups
Carl Benedick, a 37-year-old driver, who was arrested on Sunday for assaulting his wife and placed into the lock-ups at the Lethem Police Station, has died by suicide.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said that Benedick of St Ignatius Village, Lethem, was arrested on Sunday after a report was made to the police that he was assaulting his wife.
He was escorted to the Lethem Police Station, where his clothes were removed. He was then placed in a cell by himself with only shorts on while his wife’s statement was being taken.
She was issued a medical certificate and escorted to seek medical attention for her injuries.
However, at about 07:45h on Monday, ranks entered the lock-ups and discovered Benedick dead.
The man’s body was transported to the Lethem Regional Hospital. The body, according to the Police, showed no marks of violence and is currently at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Benedick was facing a number of charges for assaulting his wife and was last year found guilty of one of them and was fined $10,000. He and his wife have been together for roughly 18 years and produced five children. However, the relationship has reportedly been rocky.
Nevertheless, the Police Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) is investigating the incident.
