Duo accused of killing Corentyne man over stole cow freed
A farmer and a labourer were on Monday acquitted of the January 30, 2022, murder of cattle farmer Parmanand Lakeram called ‘Fancy’ and ‘Bachand.’
Jerry Pirtam, a 27-year-old labourer, and Gobin Balram, a 60-year-old farmer, were in 2020 charged with the murder of Lakeram.
It was alleged that on January 30, at Number 68 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, they murdered the cattle farmer.
When the matter was called today in the 51 Village Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Alex Moore, the duo’s lawyer, Bernard DaSilva, made a no-case submission, which was upheld by the Magistrate.
Media reports are that Lakeram’s body was found at the Number 68 Village backlands by relatives, with multiple gunshot wounds.
When the men were charged, the prosecution had said that several of the dead man’s friends saw him when he was shot over a stolen cow.
