East Coast man, 26, fatally shot during exchange of gunfire with Police

Gordon Sancho, a 26-year-old unemployed man from Goedverwagting Squatting Area, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was shot dead in the wee hours of Sunday following the exchange of gunfire with law enforcement officials.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) reported that the incident occurred at about 00:30h at ‘C’ Field, Cummings Lodge, when ranks from the Alberttown Police Station responded to a call about the discharging of a loaded firearm with intent.

The report was made by a 15-year-old student and her 34-year-old mother, a security guard.

The ranks, accompanied by the two individuals who made the report, proceeded to Section ‘C’ Field, Cummings Lodge, where Sancho was pointed out to them.

Upon seeing the ranks, Sancho allegedly drew a handgun from his waist and discharged two rounds in their direction, prompting the officers to take cover.

In response, one of the ranks fired two rounds at Sancho, who then ran a short distance eastward along ‘C’ Field, Cummings Lodge Road before collapsing.

He was immediately transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital by the responding officers, where a doctor saw him, and he later succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical treatment.

Police said a .380 pistol and three live rounds of .380 ammunition were recovered from the scene.
