Eccles taxi driver robbed of car, cell phone
Police are investigating an armed robbery committed on a 32-year-old taxi driver at South Ruimveldt on Wednesday.
The victim, Shon Azeez, of Eccles, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was relieved of his black Allion motor car, bearing registration number PRR 8812, and a cell phone valued at $50,000. Reports are that the robbery occurred at approximately 21:30h and involved two suspects, one of whom was armed with a handgun and a female accomplice.
According to the Police, Azeez, who is attached to the Double ‘D’ Taxi Service in Eccles, was seated in his vehicle around 20:30h when he was approached by a male suspect and a female who requested a drop to South Ruimveldt.
Upon arrival at the destination, the female passenger in the front seat directed Azeez to stop behind a “shopping plaza.” The female exited the car while the male suspect, seated behind Azeez, choked him from behind. At this moment, another male suspect, who had been standing on the southern side of the road, approached the vehicle and pointed a gun at Azeez, demanding that he open the door.
The victim complied, and the suspects proceeded to tie him up and bundle him into the back of the vehicle. The suspects then drove the vehicle to ‘A’ Field Sophia, where they left Azeez at the side of the road before escaping with the car in an unknown direction.
Despite his hands still being tied behind his back, Azeez managed to raise an alarm and was subsequently assisted by public-spirited citizens who took him to the Turkeyen Police Station.
Police investigations are ongoing as they seek to apprehend the suspects and recover the stolen vehicle and cell phone.
