Electric bike rider dies after crashing into truck

67-year-old Karan Mahadeo was killed on Saturday after allegedly riding into the path of a truck on the Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.


MTV News Update understands that Mahadeo of 452 West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme was riding an "electric bike" at the time of the accident, which occurred at about 18:10h.


According to the truck driver, he was proceeding west along the northern drive lane of the southern carriageway on Mandela Avenue when he observed Mahadeo moving north out of John Fernandes Access Road and into his path.


He alleged that he applied brakes and swerved right to avoid a collision, but despite his efforts, the left-side front portion of the lorry collided with the electric bike.


As a result of the collision, the 67-year-old man was thrown onto the road's surface, where he received injuries about his body. He was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.


The man's body was escorted to the Memorial Garden's Funeral Home, awaiting a Post Mortem Examination (PME).


A breathalyser test conducted on the truck driver showed no trace of alcohol. The 24-year-old driver of Herstelling, East Bank Demerara (EBD) is in custody, assisting with the investigation.
