Ex-policeman who drove his minibus into a melee, killing two, handed life sentence
A tearful Prince David Reid, a 61-year-old former policeman, was recently sentenced to life in prison for driving his minibus into two men during a brawl at Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara (WCD) in 2017.
After hours of deliberation in mid-February, a jury consisting of 12 individuals found Reid guilty of murdering Amit Jairam, also known as ‘Rocky,’ 36, and Randy Richard Melville, 20.
Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall of the Demerara High Court ordered that Reid serve at least 23 years in prison before being eligible for parole.
Attorney Adrian Thompson represented Reid, while State Counsel Rbina Christmas prosecuted the case.
The incident occurred on December 16, 2017, at the Tarla Dam tarmac in Meten-Meer-Zorg. Reid assaulted three people and stabbed another during the altercation, which began during a game of ‘Chic Chic.’
Following the dispute, Reid retrieved a cutlass from his bus and struck Premnauth Basdeo on the head. He then drove his minibus into Jairam, Melville, and another individual.
