Farmer jailed for 13 years for killing Bourda Market labourer over construction net
Richard Martin, a 54-year-old farmer of Wismar, Linden, Region 10, was jailed for 13 years for the unlawful killing of Bourda Market labourer Ovid Chester in September 2020.
Martin, also known as ‘Mike,’ was on trial for the capital offence of murder but opted to plead guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter.
He admitted that on September 2, 2020, at Bourda Market, Georgetown, he unlawfully killed Chester, 52. Demerara High Court Judge Simone Morris-Ramlall accepted his guilty plea in February. The Judge has ordered prison authorities to deduct the time the now-convicted man spent in pre-trial from the 13 years.
Reports are that the men were acquainted, and a dispute arose over a construction net that Martin had given Chester to sell.
Martin demanded his money, leading to a physical altercation between the two men. During the fight, Martin grabbed a knife and stabbed Chester in the chest. Police were called to the scene, and Martin was taken into custody immediately.
