Firewoman on bail for spreading false information about Fire Chief and colleagues
Latoya Chu, a 29-year-old firewoman, is now out on $350,000 bail after she was charged with seven counts of cybercrime related to disseminating false information targeting the Chief Fire Officer and several of her colleagues.
Chu, a mother of three from Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara (EBD), appeared before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Monday.
She pleaded not guilty to all charges and was granted bail totalling $350,000.
According to the prosecutor, Chu used a fake Facebook account to post damaging comments about Chief Fire Officer Gregory Wickham, his deputy, Dwayne Scotland, four firewomen, and an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
These posts, made over the course of four days in February, reportedly harmed the reputations of the virtual complainants.
After the post was discovered, a formal complaint was lodged with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters, prompting an investigation.
The mother of three was subsequently arrested, and her mobile phone was confiscated. During a search of the device, investigators reportedly found evidence linking her to the fake Facebook account.
When confronted with the allegations, Chu reportedly remained silent. She is scheduled to return to court for further proceedings on November 18, 2024.
