- Bill intends to ‘decriminalise’ attempted suicide
The government has signaled that the National Assembly has a packed agenda with a number of bills to be read and passed in 2022.
For the health sector alone, 19 bills have to be tabled in the National Assembly. This includes the tabling of the Suicide Prevention Bill.
Minister of Legal Affairs and Attorney General Anil Nandlall in a television programme “Issues in the News” said this bill will be tabled soon.
"The suicide bill will come, it’s already in its first draft, and after the budget we will soon be tabling a suicide bill,"
Minister Nandlall said.
The bill is intended to decriminalise attempted Suicide in Guyana. Currently Guyana’s Criminal Law Offences Act Chapter 8:01 (97) imposes jail time for persons who attempt suicide.
According to the law, everyone who attempts to commit suicide shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and liable to imprisonment for two years.
Also slated for the National Assembly is a bill that will address animal cruelty.
"I have had preliminary engagements with some society and organisations representing animals and yes there are legislation that will come,"
the Attorney General posited.
