FM Anthony Drayton records first win for Guyana in FIDE Chess Olympiad
Anthony Drayton was elated over the victory noting that this was the highest rated opponent he had ever defeated.
Chessbase noted that remarkably, not a single lower-rated player upset their opponent on the first 57 boards of the open section.
The first instance of such was Guyana's very own FIDE master Drayton on board 58.
Anthony Drayton (rated 1928) defeated Jordi Fluvia from Andorra (2451).
Anthony Drayton's remarkable victory over the IM rated 2450 puts Guyana open team in 94th position despite losses.
Guyana's women's team lost against Mexico who are ranked 54 in the world. Guyana's women rank at 136 at the beginning of the Olympiad.
Guyana's players will have more chances to rack up points on Saturday when the men's team faces Nicaragua and the women battle Hong Kong.
