Food vendor initially remanded over armed robbery now granted bail
Anderson Cyril, the 28-year-old food vendor who was remanded to prison last month on a charge of robbery under arms, has been granted bail.
He was granted bail on Monday when he made another court appearance before Magistrate Omadat Chandan in the Lethem Magistrate’s Court.
Cyril, who resides at Lot 362 Tabatinga, Lethem, Central Rupununi, in Region Nine, was arrested on November 10, 2024, for allegedly committing robbery under arms.
When he appeared in court on November 13, he was not required to plead to the charge, and bail was denied.
During his bail application, Cyril’s attorney, Bernard Da Silva, cited several factors supporting his release. These included the lack of progress in the case, as the prosecutor was without the case file, and the uncertainty surrounding the trial date or disclosure of statements.
The attorney also referenced Article 144 of Guyana’s Constitution, which guarantees a presumption of innocence until proven guilty and the right to a fair hearing within a reasonable time.
The attorney argued that prolonged delays would violate Cyril’s constitutional rights. In addition, the court heard that Cyril was not a flight risk, citing his strong ties to the community. His wife is pregnant, and he has a young daughter living with him in Lethem.
Despite objections from the prosecution, Magistrate Chandan ruled in favour of granting bail, setting the amount at $400,000.
The court also imposed reporting conditions, requiring Cyril to visit the Lethem Police Station weekly.
The 28-year-old food vendor was arrested on November 10, 2024, in connection with the alleged armed robbery.
Details of the incident that led to his arrest have not been disclosed, but authorities confirmed that he was taken into custody as part of an ongoing investigation.
