Former Seaman to be sentenced later this month for murder of Friendship man
Joshua O’Neil, a Friendship, East Bank Demerara (EBD) resident, has pleaded guilty to the 2020 murder of Marlon Peters, which occurred during a quarrel over a cellular phone.
O’Neil was recently arraigned before Justice Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the Demerara High Court, where he admitted to the crime.
The court has ordered probation, prison, and psychiatric reports, and O’Neil will return for his sentencing hearing on July 29, 2024.
State Counsels Alvaro Ramotar and Marisa Edwards are prosecuting the case, while attorney Ronald Bostwick represents O’Neil.
The incident occurred on May 9, 2020, around 9:45h at Gobin Dam, Friendship.
Peters, 33, of Lot 46 Q Goblin Dam, was walking home when O’Neil approached him. The two argued over a stolen cell phone from their time in the interior.
Peters walked away, but O’Neil followed and stabbed him multiple times. Peters sustained one stab wound to the abdomen and two to the back, causing him to collapse.
He was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where he was pronounced dead.
