Four arrested as GRA seizes uncustomed chicken, alcohol & cigarettes at Mahaica

The Guyana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) Law Enforcement & Investigations Division (LEID), of the Customs, Excise & Trade Operations, in an exercise on Thursday, seized three motor vehicles laden with a large quantity of uncustomed chicken at Cane Grove, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

At a separate location in the village, Officers also seized a large quantity of alcoholic beverages and cigarettes. With ongoing investigations, GRA noted that four persons have been arrested thus far.

According to Authority, it continues with its “zero tolerance” approach against smuggling and other illegal activities; thereby allowing for a level playing field for

legitimate businesses and the collection of revenue.

“GRA advises the public that foreign chicken is restricted and the consumption of such items without proper clearance and certification from the Ministry of Health may be hazardous and detrimental to one’s health,” a statement noted.

“Once again, the Authority encourages persons involved in such activities to cease and desist therefrom, and bring themselves into compliance with the nation’s Tax, Trade, and Border laws.”
