Free tuition at UG starting 2025 – President Ali

The University of Guyana (UG)

The People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) Administration will abolish tuition fees at the University of Guyana (UG) in January 2025.

“Starting from the January 2025 semester, tuition fees will be completely abolished at UG,” the President declared during a special address to the National Assembly on Thursday.

The Head of State noted that this move aims to advance human capital development and will benefit more than 11,000 current UG students and all future entrants.

According to President Ali, this initiative represents a long-term investment in the nation’s youth and their families, ensuring a more prosperous future for the country.

“The future belongs to all of these young people, and this initiative will cost us more than $18 billion,” the President stated.

In addition to abolishing tuition fees, President Ali announced the writing off of $5 billion in student loans this year, providing financial relief to thousands of past students burdened by debt.

This step toward free tertiary education fulfills a manifesto promise made by the ruling party during the 2020 campaign.
