Girl, 10, dies after being struck down by alleged speeding car in Lethem
A 10-year-old girl succumbed hours after being struck down by an alleged speeding car on Third Street Lethem, Central Rupununi.
Dead is Ruth Glasgow, a student of the Arapaima Primary School. The accident occurred at about 16:40h.
According to the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Corporate Communications Unit (CCU), Glasgow was struck down by motorcar PLL 2547, which 23-year-old Navindra Narine of Tabatinga Lethem drove.
Reports are that the motorcar was proceeding north along Third Street Lethem at a fast rate of speed, and while negotiating a left turn, Narine lost control of the vehicle and collided with the girl who was bracing on her bicycle having food.
As a result, the child and her cycle were flung some distance on the road, causing her to sustain injuries to her head and body.
The 10-year-old was picked up in an unconscious state by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Lethem Regional Hospital, where she was treated and immediately transferred to Boa Vista, Brazil, via Ambulance to seek further medical attention.
However, at about 22:40h, Glasgow succumbed to her injuries while undergoing emergency medical treatment in Boa Vista, Brazil.
Two breathalyser tests conducted on Narine gave a reading of .90 BAC and .85 BAC, respectively. The CCU noted that Narine was charged with causing death by dangerous driving and driving under the influence of alcohol prior to the girl’s death.
