GTU to resume strike from Thursday until further notice
The Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) has announced its decision to resume strike action starting Thursday, owing to failed collective bargaining with the Ministry of Education (MoE).
In a letter dated May 07, 2024, the Union said it views the government's refusal to engage in collective bargaining as a breach of labour laws and an “insult to the integrity of all teachers in Guyana.”
“We believe that enough patience was exhibited by the Union to allow MOE/Government to arrive at a satisfactory position regarding salary increases for teachers,” the missive stated.
It added, “The repeated salary impositions in December 2021, 2022, and 2023 are a clear indication that the Government is unwilling to engage the GTU meaningfully.” The Union said the strike will continue until further notice.
Last month, High Court Judge Sandil Kissoon ruled that the teachers’ strike commenced in February was lawful and enshrined in the fundamental right to collective bargaining.
Already, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall said the government will appeal the ruling.
Justice Kissoon ordered a mediation process, which saw the government and the union at the bargaining table. However, talks between the two parties broke down.
