Guyana and Serbia establish diplomatic ties; set to explore cooperation in key sectors
Guyana and Serbia have officially established diplomatic relations following the signing of a joint communiqué between the two governments on Sunday.
The document was signed by Guyana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hugh Todd, and Serbia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marko Đurić, during the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
In a statement, Guyana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that, in addition to signing the communiqué, both Ministers held bilateral discussions focused on areas of mutual interest.
These include cooperation in food security and agriculture, information and communications technology (ICT), and training and capacity building.
Minister Đurić also expressed Serbia’s support for Guyana in its ongoing border dispute with Venezuela, which is currently before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
A statement from the Serbian government emphasised its readiness to strengthen political dialogue through the creation of a political consultation mechanism, high-level visits, and cooperation within regional organisations in the Western Hemisphere.
Recalling the strong ties Guyana shared with the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY), Đurić highlighted the potential for expanding political and economic relations, as well as collaboration in higher education.
He also introduced the “The World in Serbia” scholarship programme for foreign students and expressed hope that Guyanese will soon have the opportunity to study in Serbia.
